SPECTACULAR SPELLCASTERS and Guardian Garden Gnomes
SYNOPSIS
Spectacular Spellcasters comprises two main parts:
PART 1: SPECTACULAR SPELLCASTERS
Spectacular Spellcasters is an alternative magic system for use with Tiny Dungeon 2E and other TinyD6 games. It presents new spins on magic, spellcasting, and Adventurer Creation that build on the wealth of material available in Tiny Dungeon 2E. Spectacular Spellcasters uses the components of the standard system of magic as the building blocks of a new system of magic which includes Magic Circles, Spectacular Spells, Incantations, Ley Lines, and Magic Items.
Magic Circles are localized, concentrated areas of magic energy created by a Spellcaster. Magic Circles and their associated Magic Circle Traits allow a Spellcaster to maximize the use of Spell-Touched spells and push beyond their normal limits. The potency of a Magic Circle depends on the time, effort, and Magic Circle Traits a Spellcaster has invested in it.
Spectacular Spells are specialized, repeatable spells that become easier for a Spellcaster to cast with additional practice. They have more powerful effects than those created with Spell-Touched. Some Spectacular Spells can last as long as the caster continues to concentrate on the spell.
Incantations are collaborative spells that produce magical effects greater than those created by a lone Spellcaster. Incantations allow for bigger magic, like high-level spells from other popular RPGs.
Ley Lines are bands of magical energy that flow, swirl, and shift across the surface of the world. Casting spells is significantly easier when on a Ley Line.
Magic Items are any objects imbued with magical properties, such as swords, armor, wands, and rings — and potions and Familiars, too! You can create your unique Magic Item or Familiar at Adventurer Creation and add enchantments to it as you gain more experience.
PART 2: GUARDIAN GARDEN GNOMES
In the Guardian Garden Gnomes setting, you take on the role of magical Gnomes, Grimalkins (cats), Gwyllgi (dogs), and mundane Humans who battle the forces of evil in a modern world of wonder and adventure. Armed with magic and might, you keep the world safe from horrors too, well... too horrible to be revealed to the general population. So gather your friends and prepare to save the world from the monsters that prowl the night... and the old abandoned warehouse... and the mall.
Many of the ideas in Guardian Garden Gnomes are inspired by taking our dog for walks around our neighborhood and looking for the magic in the mundane. It is influenced by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Charmed, the Dresden Files, and other magic-filled “monster of the week” style shows and books.
Guardian Garden Gnomes includes three new Heritages, new creatures, and creature modification tables. These new additions can also be used in more traditional fantasy settings.
Spectacular Spellcasters requires Tiny Dungeon 2E by Alan Bahr and Gallant Knight Games.
INTRODUCTION
Spectacular Spellcasters grew out of a desire to do something different with magic in the TinyD6 system.
I remember reading about a certain fictional, Chicago-based, modern-day wizard creating a magic circle and the idea stuck with me. That same wizard is also known for making use of a fairly narrow selection of spells. He also has a small collection of magic items that he uses to enhance his abilities. The rules that follow were inspired by these ideas.
These rules allow you to create witches, wizards, and warlocks who use magic in a variety of ways.
For example, you can choose to make the most out of Spell-Touched spells by specializing in Magic Circles and investing in Magic Circle Traits. The cost of doing so is that you’ll usually need to spend a few Actions creating and strengthening your Magic Circle before you can start letting the magic bolts fly, and you won’t be able to access as many of the more potent effects of Spectacular Spells.
Another option is to invest in a few signature Spectacular Spells and raise them to their highest skill level. Spectacular Spells are specialized, repeatable spells. The cost of doing so is that your Magic Circle won’t be as versatile.
If you’re interested in even more powerful magical effects, then Incantations are the way to go. These are performed more safely by small groups of Spellcasters, but there are ways to perform them on one’s own — if you’re willing to take the risk.
One could also decide to invest in Magic Items which can make it “cheaper” to access magical effects, but doing so may come with the need for recharging these items and the risk of losing them entirely.
Of course, you can also mix and match from these new options as you see fit to create the wizarding Adventurer you desire. There are many paths to magic might, and all of them can lead to amazing collaborative storytelling.
